The
Washington Post reports today that vice-presidential daughter Mary Cheney is
expecting a
child with her partner
Heather Poe.
Grandma and Grandpa are
thrilled.
And the religious right? Not so
much.
It will be interesting to see if Mary and Heather
choose to leave Virginia which has some of the most restrictive laws in the
country regarding gay familes. Heather cannot legally co-parent-adopt the child,
nor will she have any legal rights or legal relationship whatsoever with their
son or daughter since voters passed the virulently anti-gay Marshall/Newman
Amendment last month.
(Actually, Virginia law already precluded Heather from co-adopting; the
Marshall/Newman Amendment was just an extra law added to the Virginia books to
make it super-duper clear that queers are not welcome in
Virginia.)
UPDATE 12-07-06:
In case you are wondering exactly how much the right wing has their diapers in a wad over the Cheney-Poe baby, People for the American Way has a round-up of the loving ways of our so-called Christian nation:
Media Research Center’s Robert Knight called it “tragic.” Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth called it “immoral.” Concerned Women for America ’s Janice Crouse called it “unconscionable.” What are they talking about? A couple deciding to have a kid. If Vice-President Cheney thought that some of his biggest supporters would congratulate him on a new grandchild – or at least restrain themselves from sending out press releases – he had to be disappointed at the right-wing reaction to his daughter’s pregnancy and her plans to raise the child with her lesbian partner. "Rosemary Cheney's Baby"--it will be a hit faster than you can count to 666.
so ya, this is gonna go crazy with the press, but what up with that crazy law? what is this 'free' country doing? good thing theres separate federal and state governments,,,
something doesnt seem right about the amendment, but congrats on the child.
it will be very popular, i think....
Congrat! I wish them the best!!
Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way, but I find it somewhat disheartening to see someone like Mary Chaney getting pregnant. It's not that I think anyone should be denied that happiness and that right...obviously. But to see Mary, who supported her father and President Bush in blocking so many rights for gays, get pregnant, seems almost scary in a way. What values will she be passing on to the next generation? How will this child, once he/she is at an age where he can form his own opinions, be able to look up to grandpa Chaney with any kind of respect knowing that he is the man that helped/backed Bush on so many anti-gay agendas, laws, amendments, etc....?
I've turned into one of *them*......Please forgive all the typos...lol
Mary, Mary, Mary........Why couldn't you wait until your dad is out of office? You and the rest of the gay community don't think sometimes. Is your dad and the rest of the executive staff not have enough to concern themselves with? You should have waited until your father was out of office.
Besides the fact the Mary supported her father while he helped push legislature through that would help keep her from having a legal family, Mary and Heather's decision to have a baby is their's and their's alone. It should not, and obviously does not, hinge on whether it may effect her father in office. Her father and the rest of the 'executive staff' wouldn't have so much to worry about right now if they hadn't been so busy discriminating against perfectly good, honest, and valuable Americans or hiding despicable acts of congressman, etc.
Congratulations to them...I think she is finally doing something to promote not only adoption by gay couples, but will be an impact on gay marriage sooner than later. I was not happy with her comments in her book-but now, she's making a statement and don't give a damn about her Father,Bush and the religious right who put them there. This is for her and her lover-period. Why should they wait til her Father is out of office. I think the timing is good for more clout on the issues. Her Dad may just come around and be the supporter for gay rights we need right now, even though I can't stan the man personally!

Congratulations !!!!
i normally don't do this stuff....but my thought on this whole subject is to just leave them alone and there decisions....they are just like everyone else. and they love each other and if they want a child then i am happy for them....everyone deserves to be happy.....i wish that the press and news preople would just stay out of others personal life....it is a very rude thing to do....it is a very rude thing when they lie about others and that is what most of the shit coming out of reporters mouth.
CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!!hope you have a wonderful loving life together.
