This letter is in response to Ben Stein's recent "essay" in The American Spectator, in which he stated the following:

I'm a gay man. I have absolutely zero interest in "young boys." I've never heard of a film called Endless Summer (although I can quote pretty much all of All About Eve from memory). I find it very difficult to believe that Ben's "very best friend" belongs to a community he so eagerly and casually denegrates in print.
As to his larger point, that Democrats love Bill Clinton and are therefore hypocrites for attacking Mark Foley: let's say for a moment that he's absolutely right and the stories are absolutely parallel and the hypocrisy that Stein perceives is absolutely real. Who cares??!! The attitude of "if they can do it, so can we" that results from such statements is sickening. Way to promote family values there, Stein.

We need people to protect our children, not victimize them. I noticed that some have said that Foley needs to be thrown out of office ... I think you forgot to turn on CNN for the past two days but the guy is no longer in office.
As to Republicans protecting a pedophile, by all accounts it would appear that Hastert knew only of the emails (which were viewed as questionable but not unethical by a bipartisan committee) not the im's. In fact, it would appear that local media outlets (Florida) knew of the im's long before any national political figure aside from Foley and sat on them because they were not "news worthy" (hows that for your conspiracy theory).
Finally, let us not forget the lessons we learned from Gerry Studds (D-MA) a true pioneer and visionary when it came to using the page service as a dating pool. He never stepped down, he never received public censure and eventually retired in 1996 without be the worse for wear.

As a recovering Alcoholic (9yrs) gay man and physician previously closeted and married I'm comfortable with the answer "M. Foley made Mark Foley do what he did". The vast majority of pedophiles are decidedly hetero and act on their own volition. Alcohol can blunt or remove inhibitions to unrealized behaviors but cannot be held responsible for same. Mr. Foley is a sick man who is undoubtedly in need of some form of help if that's possible. He's obviously a bright and talented man but also quite ill.

I believe mascmn40s hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head. No blame on alcohol, no blame on the Republicans, no blame on the Democrats, homosexuals, heterosexuals, or any other type of sexuals; Representative Foley made Representative Foley do this.
As to whether a majority of pedophiles are hetero vs. homo, yes it is true, as of 2001 only 1/3 of pedophilia offenses were committed by homosexuals. Keep in mind, however, that by the same study, the general population in 2001 was 20:1 in favor of heterosexuals. This means that homosexual pedophiles are significantly overrepresented in child sex offence cases. The comment by Ben Stiller is so wrong. There is a huge difference between being gay and being a pedophile. I would argue that it is not part of gay culture to be involved in pedophile behavior. Of course, this is what mainstream America often believes...so Stiller is merely feeding the stereotype a bit further.

technically speaking Mark Foley is not a pedophile, as the term applies to sexual attraction to PRE-PUBERTAL girls or boys.
The congressman is a homosexual person who happens to be attracted to post pubertal/adolescent male.............this of course does not excuse his totally unacceptable behavior when he should have known better..........especially as he touts himself to be the champion for the protection of the underage from all kinds of exploitation.!!!!! Final comment. Its funny how so many so far have lambasted Republicans for trying to save their political hides instead of protecting the pages involved but, when reading the comments left on this page, I find that most are political in nature and really have nothing to say as to how the safety of pages now or in the future can be butressed. To most so far, this has been an opportunity to throw rocks at the Republican party when, as I pointed out in an early post, see Gerry Stubbs, they are not the party that got the ball rolling on these types of actions. Are those who criticize Republicans, pointing and laughing saying "look what the party of Family Values did" really saying "well at least its not the Democrats, then we couldnt criticize because they refuse to take moral stands?" Come on. Quit viewing this as political issue. Republican or Democrat, alcoholic or teetotaler, victim or fabricator, Foley is to blame and that is it.

The fact that he was into underage boys should not be constued to be a "gay thing"
