Former NBA Player Says He's Gay

ESPN confirms that ex-NBA player John Amaechi is coming out as a gay man. Amaechi tells his story in an autobiography titled 'Outside the Lines,' which hits stores Feb. 20.  Get the story (plus some interesting video) about pro-basketball's first-ever out player.

The men at OutSports.com weigh-in about Amaechi and the longtime rumors about his being gay, while ESPN columnist LZ Granderston makes a fast-break to talk about the slam-dunk question:
"I do not mean to belittle Amaechi's experience or the experiences of any other athlete who comes out after retirement ...  But I can't help but wonder: When will somebody simply man up? That is, come out while he is still playing and finally demystify this whole gay athlete thing once and for all."  See 'Another Ex-athlete Comes Out? Not Impressed')

The trauma of being gay is a sufficient reason to keep it a deep, dark secret. I cannot imagine another gay man being critical of another gay man for not coming out, let alone someone who has a high profile in the sports world. Gayness destroys many lives, particularly those who never venture out and live the life they know nature, rather than nurture, bestowed upon them. Until there is absolute proof that gayness is inborn, many gays will continue to be numbered among the living dead.

There was a time when gay male (team sports) athletes never came out, even after retirement.  Now, some are coming out in retirement.  Eventually, one of them will have the...fortitude...to do it while still playing, and perhaps earn the respect of his teammates for being who he is.  Male team sports may be the last, most important place to come out and finally bring North America out of the Dark Ages.

IT SHOULDN'T MATTER IF HE'S GAY OR STRAIGHT. OBIVIOUSLY HE DID WHAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO. HE WAS PAID TO DO A JOB, DID IT, AND DIDN'T BOTHER ANYONE BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE HAD SOME COMPLAINTS. SO WHO CARES....
