Happy Gay Pride! Mmm, Maybe Not

"A hundred people were not afraid to go out and protest homophobia and fascism."
-- Nikolai Alexeyev, a Moscow Pride Organizer

Gay Pride month officially kicks off this week. Floats are being built. Brunch menus are being planned. All manner of rainbow doodads are being readied to be worn proudly.

And ... Skinheads and militant Orthodox Christians are attacking gay and lesbian marchers. Bricks are being thrown. Gays are being detained by police.

Quite a contrast, eh? And yet, both true, not to mention related.

The violence I'm talking about happened to gay pride organizers in Moscow this weekend. Andy Towle over at Towleroad has a compelling round-up of what took place, which you can read here.

When you're feeling blase about gay pride in any-town-USA, think about our brothers and sisters in Moscow (or Nigeria, or St. Maarten, or... ) and remember that gay pride events -- and being able to be out and proud -- are things we fought for, things we're still fighting for.

Oh, and we still don't have civil rights in our own country.

Maybe gay pride does still matter.

This news only strengthens my opinion that we are wasting value time, money and effort to in a probably doomed campaign to gain domestic marriage rights, when far more critical issues like the lives of gay brothers and sisters worldwide are still at stake. I say we work on lobbying our government to influence foreign governments on basic human rights issues like the physical safety of LGBT folks  before we tackle the relative niceities of domestic civil marriage.  The priorities of the movement need to be reexamined.  We are fantasizing about catering and gift registries while our brothers and sisters are being imprisoned and beaten all over the world.  First things first, my brothers and sisters!

First of all that's great that Russians are getting together to show their pride. Secondly, if you're going to come in here and gay bash, davidzamarron, first learn how to spell, and if you're so straight, what are you doing in the AOL Gay and Lesbian forum anyways? Most people who are so adamantly homophobic, ignorant and hateful are usually GAY THEMSELVES, so come out already david and shut up, or stay out. Your spelling proves just how ignorant you are anyways

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are contacting you because we are producing an entertaining documentary on lives, friends, family, and community of gay people.  We are trying create an ice breaking catalyst that will trigger the decay of discrimination of gays.  We feel that by producing an informative documentary with an entertaining storyline overlaid, we would be able to captivate not only the eyes and ears of the gay community, but the world.  Most people are kind, but without knowledge they are ignorant.

Our film will incorporate the real life stories of the gay community.  It will include history, discrimination, relationships, controversy, family, pioneers, heroes, coming out, adoption, marriage/unions and politics!!!  This film is in no way explicit or pornographic.  We intend to portray the lifestyles and sexuality of being gay, not necessarily sex.

Considering your organizational position, we would like to ask for your support.  We would greatly appreciate if you could forward this letter to your audience to spread the word.  Also, we would ask your audience to do the same.  The results would be exponential.

In return, we would include you not only on our website as a supporter, along with your logos and links, but in our film credits.

Our website is www.GAYthemovie.com and www.MySpace.com/gaythemovie
