The Changing Dynamics of Gay in Hollywood

Real-life dramas of closeted actors being outed are popping up as storylines on TV shows like 'Brothers & Sisters' and 'Dirt.' USA Today looks at the issue and examines the ever-evolving rules of being gay in Hollywood.

For some accompanying photo glamour, AOL Entertainment News adds a gallery of actors who are gay but play straight or straight but play gay on TV.

I really think that the biggest hallmark of acceptance will arrive when more than a few openly gay actors in Hollywood play straight roles (with romantic and/or sexual storylines) and nobody is bothered or struck dumb with disbelief.

At least we're past the stage when a straight actor playing gay is described as brave or heroic; Tom Hanks just happened to be brilliant in PHILADELPHIA, but I'm sure that the main reason he got an Oscar for it was that playing a gay man was akin to playing an alien life form at the time (ditto for William Hurt in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN).

I'm looking forward to the "Brothers & Sisters" plot unfolding -- altho' we should be referring to Jason Lewis' character as bisexual, not gay.
