Gay Marriage: It's All the Rage. And I Do Mean Rage.

George Bush held a press conference yesterday in which he professed to care very much about the moral integrity of our nation. He outlined the reasons why it's necessary that Congress work to amend the Constitution to ban gays from being able to marry in states that might otherwise sanction it. It has virtually no chance of passing in the Senate, but as I said in my last blog post, this whole thing is about elections and not really about gay marriage at all.

I was glad ABC news noticed, as I did, that the Bush press conference was moved out of the Rose Garden where it was previously scheduled to be held: "The president stood on the stage alone, gave a muted speech and quickly left ... While his words in favor of the Marriage Protection Amendment were tough, the event itself  lacked the pageantry that could have backed up the force of his words."

Did Bush (read: his handlers) experience some last-minute second-guessing as to how it might look for the leader of the free world to be using such a grand and floral presidential pulpit to so visibly single out a group of Americans as second-class citizens? And waving around the U.S. Constitution as a master uses his whip, no less?

I got an e-mail today from my high school English teacher. He's a dear friend now and has been for 25+ years, but it's still fun to refer to him as "my high school English teacher." He reads my blog (talk about pressure to punctuate) and wrote to me to echo my outrage, saying that Bush's constitutional meddling is "the first time ever our Constitution is used to be discriminatory, exclusive instead of inclusive. It would mean the destruction of the document and another step toward the fascism this administration stands for."

In fact, I received a bunch of outraged e-mail on this topic, and outraged comments left here on the blog -- on both sides of the issue, of course. I'll share a few of my favorites, and hope you'll continue to chime in with your thoughts as well. The headlines are mine:


Against Amending the Constitution
"It is quite clear that Conservatives have nothing left to fall back on and are now pushing this issue in attempt to rally their base. Many of whom are afraid of what they do not know. It is mind boggling that they are so quick to discriminate against gay couples who deserve the same rights as those that are afforded to straight couples through marriage. I also blame the Gay and Lesbian organizations who are supposed to help fight against these blatant attempts to alienate gay people by not acting as aggressively as possible. By aggressive I mean a campaign that would help educate the ignorant as to the many contribution of gay and lesbians and one that would remind people that our country should have already learned its lesson about what discrimination does to the fabric of society in general. It is long overdue ... "

In Favor of Amending the Constitution
"'We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal' by Thomas Jefferson does not mean that marriage should be between two men or two women as our whole Christian Heritage is based on the principal that society is best served by a socially accepted and legally defined marriage as between one man and one woman. Not one man and several women or one women and several men or man and man or woman and woman but between one man and one woman. People Who SAY They Don't Hate Gays, Then Proceed to Hate on Gays
"God didn't want Adam to be lonely and created WOMAN.  I don't hate gay/lesbian people.  Those I've worked with have been some of the hardest working, fun people to be teamed with on a project.  I pray they all get the psychological help needed before they burn in hell's fire.  God may have made them predisposed to prefer someone of the same sex, but that is just their personal 'thorn in the flesh' that God can help them with if they seek His will.  We all have 'thorns' which shows God's power and our weakness. We need to lean on HIM!!  We know His will so why deliberately make laws to go against Him?"

kidwellc commented about the Bible. She did a fair job for an illiterate!! Heaven help us all. Never mind home -schooling. Just try Schooling! I am hoping that all your misspelled words, inaccurate quotes & just plain ignorance comes from the fact that you just might have been "excited" over the issue. There are statistically 10% of the world population that are gay. No more, no less. Never has been more, never will be more. Perhaps if more people read more instead of voicing opinions without basis in fact, they might just take a long, hard look. Being around gay people won't make you gay, won't give you HIV, won't make your children gay if their teacher is, won't do anything to you other than maybe learning something of interest that the gay person just might have something intelligent to offer. To loosely quote: God doesn't want you to be gay?"  says who?All you "straight" people should get some things straight: If God doesn't want people to be gay, then why did he create them? I just love these people who pick and choose what they want to quote from the Bible.  How about "love thy neighbor as thyself" or "do unto others as you would have others do unto you"(yes, that is in the Bible).

I am a mother and a grandmother and if any of my children or grandchildren told me they were gay, I could never love them any less than I do now.  

I believe in "live and let live".  I don't want the government telling me who I can marry and who I can't marry.  That is exactly what the government is doing to homosexuals.  It is not right no matter what Bush or any of the other people who misquote the Bible say.  To use the Bible and God's word in this way is just WRONG!!

As far as I'm concerned, the issue of the consitution being used to discriminate is just as important as who is being discriminated against.  I don't care what our founding fathers thought about gays; I don't think they would have wanted the consititution used as a tool for alienation.  "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal..."  I want to know how Mr. George Bush and the others who support this amendment define the word equal.  Some days I honestly think that if I could, I would rather raise my kids in another country.....the direction the USA seems to be headed is rather scary.

I can not belioeve that people will qoute the bible in opposition to gay marriage. In the same chapter of Leviticus where it says "-God looks upon man who sleeps with man or woman without the sacriment of marriage in disgust, it also says the penalty for a childs disrespect towards his parents is death, or that the punishment for man sleeping with a woman while on her period is death by stoning, so before you make yourself look like idiots do the research and educate yourself on what it is that you have been told to believe.  This is written by a gay man, obviously only the gays and gay supporters are intelligent enough to be balt to read more than 1 chapter or verse of the bible, which most opposer cling to, what ignorance and hypocracy.

I just want to speak out for the gay people. YES we know that it is a sin to be gay. But we all sin in one or another everyday. Thus LIVING in SIN. For the people that say WE are going to hell I say to them I will look down upon you for judging me...who gave you that right.. So I read my bible and there it saids that only one person can tell me I'm wrong and that is GOD and he will deal with me on judgement day. Second about this marriage. For the ignorant people out there let me talk you that most Gay or lesbian people want to be married not for the religion part of marriage but for the legal put of marriage. Such as taxes, sharing things together like a home and children and to be by your parterns dieing  bed. Small things like that straight people take for granted. We do not have rights to those things.  So why not take the religion out of it.. Let a gay marriage not be done in a church but gay couples who choose to have life parterns should have the same legal benefits a straight one. Maybe not even calling it marriage if thats what make straight people fell liek they have something of their own. Because this is home of the free and a land that decrimination is not tolerated.Why dont we live by what our founding fathers have taught us?

With  regards the  comments  that  state  religion  as  a reason  for their  opposition  of  gay  marriage;
Honestly  now,  why  should  any  one  of  you  spend  your  time  fighting 2  people  who  are  in  loves  chose  to  create  a legal  union? I realize  that you all may  be concerned that  this  will be  "the  downfall of  ethics and  moral  standards",  but  get  it  through  your  narrow  minds,  as  I have,  that  there are things  we  SHOULD  be  worried  over.  Such  as  the  sexual  predators in the  world,  both  gay  and  straight and the  folks  who  are  out  there in  the world "bashing"   others  for their  choices,  when  their  choice  does  not  have  an  affect on  anyone  else. Your  children will see "gay"  regardless!  Remember  when  it  was  tabu  for  2  different  races  to marry? Many  people  got  out their  King  James  and  qouted  scripture  on  that  as  well! I  have  seen  some  fine  Christians come  from those  unions!  I  recently  met a  young  lady  who  was  raised  by  two  gay  women.  Guess what....she  was  coordinating a  walk for  cancer  research.  Oh  and  by the  way...she's  married ( to  a man) with  2  children.  So please  choose  your  religious  debate  wisely!  H

I act and sing in local community theaters and have been doing so for well over 30 years.

My hobby has caused me to come in contact with and befriend many Gay people over the years.  

When I was younger, I believed that sexuality was a choice.  That these people I knew who were Gay either made a conscience or subconscience choice to be Gay.

As time went by and I became more knowledgeable, and hopefully wiser, I started to rethink.

Gay people are born Gay.  Just as much as heterosexuals were born heterosexuals.

It is not a trial that God has given them.  It is the life they were given.  

Gay is not something that you pick up or are infected with.  It is not a condition or a disease.

It is as normal as a person being born white, black, or hispanic.

It is simply part of life, and for anyone to deny these people the right to live their lives with all the freedoms because of their sexual orientation is an autrocity.

I am a conservative.  I am a Republican.  I am against anyone denying another human being their rights based on gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Wrong is wrong.

I have supported President Bush in many things that have been unpopular, but I will not support his stand against Gay marriage.

He has no right nor does anyone else to deny any Gay person the right to marry in their fashion.  LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS are not just the rights of heterosexuals.

They are the rights of all people.

In any  Nation , there must be morals of right , Wrong. Natural and unnatural, . but those who understand  call them "Morals" which include Principles of Right , wrong and natural and unnatural, Good and evil, True and false , . a Nation and people must also have standards of the same . and we have put those in the forefront of the people . We also as a society place what is called unaccepted conduct of its people .
why do you suppose there was onlt man and woman ?. and both were created or made  one for the other  for three reasons . # 1 was to keep man and woman from sinning , i will come back to this one later, #2 was for companionship, #3 was to populate the earth, which two men or two women together cannot do regardless how hard they may try.
Now back to # 1. of course you must believe that God created man and woman for starters, and also you must believe that God made woman from Adam so He would have a Help meet !. and of course you must also believe that there is a God of creation. and the myth that God created Homosexuals must be put to rest, because God created Adam . and then made Eve . and the two were Married by God . and were told to populate the earth. and God didn't create any homosexuals in the beginning , nor did He change His mind and create them later, that would make God a liar, and say He condones what He condemns , and even the homosexual knows that is wrong . the homosexual will not except Gods Word on their conduct as written in the Scriptures , because they say it was written by men, yet they will say that God loves them and made them that way !! where in the scriptures did they find that ? and did not the same men write that to if it be so ?.

personally, I don't believe in hell, and last time I checked, that is my right and still protected under the constitution...if you want to believe I'm going there for being gay, that's your right, but, I'm pretty sure your bible still says "Judge not, lest ye be judged"

Adam and Eve is a biblical story.  God really did not invent Adam from the dust and Eve from his rib.  Wouldn't that make Eve a clone?  And, if Evev were a clone of Adam so it must follow that Eve and Adam being from the same genetic material would have been incestuous as well.

What horrible people that state they believe in the God and Christ, yet they can sit in on judgement of another so handily despute the fact that we were taught, "Judge not, lest you be judged".

You are just another of the countless religious hypocrites that stand atop their soapboxes and espouse damnation and hellfire on the soulS of Gay people instead of showing the love and compassion that was taught by Christ.

Gay people were made Gay.  It was birth.    Have you loved them?  Do you know them?   Have you loved among them?  Have you walked a mile in their shoes?

As a country we need to be more accepting of the gay or lesbian lifestyle. People are born the way they are. They having nothing to do with it. By not lettning them have the same rights to marriage WE'RE discriminating just like WE discriminated the blacks. We have a chance to not repeat what took hundreds of years to start fixing. If we don't let them get married we're stepping on their rights as AMERICAN CITIZENS! "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, ESTABLISH JUSTICE, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Is it really justice if they can't get maried but everybody else can? America as a whole is HYPOCRITICAL.

Gay Marriage? There is no such possible thing. As impossible as it is for me to "marry" my dog or my car. Opening up marriage to include the possibility of "alternate lifestyles" opens up an entirely different meaning to what has been known since the begining of man. When we redefine what has always been wrong and what has always been right, then what's next? If you want to be homosexual, then that's your business. But, don't  under any circumstances tell the other 95% of Americans that we'd better like what you're doing. It's come to a point where we as Americans are being told that we'd better accept and love your lifestyle. If not we'll find a judge somewhere who will declare that right is wrong and wrong is right. I have friends who are gay and they tend to agree that this issue has become to political. It is a personal choice that has become an enforced public issue.  We as Americans are not very good at accepting socially forced issues, if we are allowed a vote on this issue you will see a tremendous backlash on this incredibly divisive issue.

With all religious views aside, the real issue about gay marriage is the lack of family stability. According to a multidisciplinary approach including research findings and methodologies related to family development (Sigelman-2006) these sociology reports and statistics show that a practicing homosexual has over 1,000 partners in a lifetime as well as a 60% greater divorce rate above the 50% divorce rate of the heterosexual community in the national average. These statistics of a homosexual home far exceeds the percentage of children in abusive home, their exposure to drugs or sexually transmitted diseases, or juvenile delinquents from single-parent homes. Stability is key and this is not something that can be offered by the homosexual community as per statistics and reports.

Why does President Bush or anyone else for that matter care who I live with, sleep with, or share MY life with. I go to work everyday, own my home, raise my son, who by the way is an outstanding young man, pay my bills on time, pay my taxes. Why am I not allowed to be married to whom I want. Isnt it called the
LAND OF THE FREE. I am an American citizen, so why am I not allowed to have all the benefits of one.  If given the opportunity I would like to sit with him and ask him to explain to my face why he thinks I am not as good as he is.

I believe the truth,the truth is that gay or lesbian is a choice of a lifestyle that is immoral. I am sick of it being thrown in my face! I have nothing against the people who claim this lifestyle,but why do I have to keep hearing about this part of their lives? Why do we all have to hear the way they prefer sex? I don't want to hear it. If you want to live this lifestyle keep the sexual talk private like EVERYONE should. I dont go around telling people what I do in my bedroom, no one should! Even though I believe it is wrong and immoral, people still are living this way. I dont like it and its my beliefs and morals that have made me this way. God loves ALL of us. ALL OF US, no matter what we "do",but he does not love our sin.thankyou

Don't you know that you do that every day? Your profile says that your hobbies include "God,hubby,kids,music." Are you not "throwing" around the fact that you are straight and married to a man when you say that? I mean, aren't you telling the whole world about who you sleep with?

I am married and I dont go around saying what my husband and I do in bed. It is private,so keep it that way. Why do we have to hear what your "sexual preference is". Ok really Bush what the hello are you doing? Huh? By banning gay marriage will "protect" men and women in their marriage rights? What the hell? How is that protecting their rights? It's not if their not gay is it? It shouldnt matter to anyone who you marry. No one can control another in the way they can live their life. It should be their choice shouldn't it? Why isn't it, why isn't every American free or equal. Being gay is having the freedom of choice to who you would like to marry. Everyone should have the right to choose who they would like to marry. America isn't the best country in the world stop giving yourselves so much credit. If America was then wouldn't we all look out for eachother in equailty, happiness, protection, ect? People grow up and no longer do parents have the ability to say who their child can marry. The people in the world will turn on you. They will because gay people are looked upon as different. Why don't people look at Bush differently look at the shitty job he's done. Gay people do good for economy as do blacks and whites. We are all equal, well we should be. We are all very smart and capuable of anything. If you dont agree think about these few things. Why did people vote for Bush knowing his father as president in past years had issues with Iran and now that he became president what did Bush have on his hands issues with Iraq? Did Bush run for president knowing that he'd finish what his father started? Also, Why do we hear so much on straight men beating their wives/girlfriends and never gay people beating up their girlfriends/boyfriends? Im not saying gay person is perfect but you don't hear much on them other than wanting to be equal in being able to marry. Think about this. Why are people so stuck-up. Has anyone noticed that the great and impotent Wizard of Odd, Bush, is like the other wizard, sending people on impossible missions (WMD) and shaking the curtains (the entire gay marriage hyperbole) to cover the fact that he is simply an incompetent nincompoop, doing as badly as can be in a job for which he is so underqualified that we are the laughing stock of the world? His reasoning that since he prays he is doing the "right" thing for this country is suspicious.  Who the hell is he praying to, and just who the hell is answering him?!

All of his posturing and Commander in Chief-ing and unconscionable stands, i.e., gay marriage, abortion, wolmen's rights, are simply to cover up the fact he can't get us out of a war he started - and that he's making Vietnam all over again.

He should be taken seriously though.  His governing council of appointees have a handpuppet evangelicals listen to.  We should all be working and fighting against them all to keep America free their read on morality and attack on the constitution.  This primary has shown that people woujld rather vote for the corrupt incompetents currently in officer in the Rep. party, than clear them out and give someone else a chance to be corrupted.

I'm glad I'm in my 60's since I'll be long gone by the time his Supreme Court wreaks havoc on America, the atmosphere and ozone layer are permanently destroyed, there won't be a National Park left, and the world will be filled with oil and mineral extraction equipment, the air will be as foul as old London's, there won't be an inch of land left for wildlife, poor and unlucky people will be back in poorhouses, and we will finally wake up, and be all sorry we were ever born.

Get with it people - he's the wizard of mass distruction.

Do homosexuals like to be called straight? Why not?  I think it is because they don't consider themselves to be straight.  But now they want to be called married when they are not and cannot be.  This is double standards.  If homosexuals wish to live in that lifestyle and be faithful to one person so be it.  But that is not a marriage just as a man and woman who live together and are faithful to each other are not married.  Marriage is an institution composed of a man and a woman.  That is the way it has always been and homosexuals and unmarried persons have no right to say they are married. Marriage was started by God and legalized by governmental laws all over the world.  Grow up!  There are other ways to show your committment to each other than with a lie.

I am wondering Dear Mr Bush (who isn't my president!) how you are protecting MY rights as a married person by trying to ban the marriages of my gay and lesbian friends, neighbors, family members, students, and strangers?  How does this save the "sanctity" of my marriage as a woman to a man?  That I just cannot understand??  Can you please help me to understand this you ignorant, bigotted, facist?

I am a teacher, a wife, a mother.  I am a child of a lesbian mother and proud to be!  I have taught my children that love matters.  That is all.  I do not care if my children are gay or straight.  I do not care if they are in interracial relationships!  All I care about is that they are loved and that they can give love.  That is all that is important.  If we teach love, acceptance, understanding, equality what a wonderful nation and world we could live in!  We all have a right to love who we love!  We have a right to insure our loved ones.  We all deserve to be able to be at our loved ones bedside when it is their time to leave this world.  We have a right to make decisions about how that life leaves this world if we have spent our entire adult lives with that person, regardless of whether we are straight or gay.  You have no right to say that a bond of that magnitude is immoral!

My lord Mr Bush, nobody is threatening to take away your wife's right to nurse you in your last hours, and I have serious doubts as to the fact that you are actually a full human being.  You rather remind us that Darwin may have been quite correct....  You sir are not and have never been and never will be my president.  Shame on you Mr Bush...

i read one of your comments where the person stated a fact. our country already went through vast troubles with discrimanation. why go through that again? i happen to be a woman in an extremely loving relationship with another woman, so why do these "gay haters" care so much? Our constitution says " all men are created equal" we already fixed that statement by adding woman to the mix. so what part of the "all" or the "equal" does this country not understand? personally i don't care if the whole country hates me because i love another woman, i don't care what they think of me having a daughter, what bothers me is that they are placeing "us" in a catagory, preposing that we be treated differently than any one else. i will say this how ever, the day a constitutional ammendment is created discriminating gay and lesbian people, is the day that i rally for minorities (no i am not racist) to be discriminated against again!!!! not because i hate or dislike them,, but if our country is going to become haters all over again, then why not hate on all of the minorities at the same time instead of seperating us from them!!!

Why is it that the people who so vehemently oppose gay marriage--as well as the rights and privilieges of gay people, in general--seem to be unable to put two words together that are spelled correctly?  Could it be their bigotry and hatred for people blinds them and prevents them from being able to formulate a sentence that is legible, not to mention understandable?
I am a born-again Christian, I love God, I believe in His power, and I also believe in HIS unfailing love.  I read the Bible, pray daily, and try my hardest to be the BEST Christian that I can be.  In November of 2003, when I was at my lowest after a horribly cruel breakup with someone who was also my good friend, I met a woman that I FIRMLY AND ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE was sent into my life by my Loving Father.  I know because I heard Him speak to me the night this woman and I first met.  Since then, I have been blessed to be in a wonderful, loving, caring, and fulfilling relationship with her, that more than meets my every need.  Yes, I would like the world to know that I am in this beautiful committment, with an even MORE beautiful woman, but I can't because of the lop-sided and hateful feelings of people like you.  And you call yourself a Christian?
I won't apologize for being "different", as some choose to say.  I will, however, respect your right to YOUR opinion, however illiterate and illegible it may seem to be.....You won't win any people over, or save any souls, by acting so ignorant towards others.  And please remember, above all else, that GOD IS LOVE and "Judge not, lest YE be judged."

Mostly "straight" people are just worried about the fact that they can't keep it in their pants when they are married. People don't want to feel bad that "evil sinners" can actually fall in love and be faithful and find one person to be with while they can't. Love is love. You can't help who you fall in love with. Love has nothing to do with politics. Politics should have nothing to do with love. Now a days, people forget that love has this little thing to do with marriage, because everyone is too busy trying to screw everyone else over making themselves be on top. They get married for fame or money, or whatever other reason. If they can, why can't people that are truly in love and want to spend a real life together? Let people live. Let people love.

As a straight guy, I can't seem to grasp what it is that makes homosexuality any thing other than the sexaully deviant behavior that it is. I have no desire to  stop it or prevent it. Go ahead and pursue your happiness.

From this vantage point it appears as if gays want to repeal the laws of nature.

Even if gays get their gay way on every issue, marraige etc., they still deviate from the non-negotiable basic laws of nature, the statistics, the DNA programing, the ying and yang, the polarity of the universe etc.
I can only assume that denial is the gay defense against and rejection of these aspects of observable reality.

Total pro-gay political victories and complete gay solidarity would only amount to a mass group denial and rejection of reality.

I am a Catholic Republican woman who has been married for 20 years to the same boy I married in High School.  We both think that a ban on gay marriage is a joke.  In this country, straight people have made sure to destroy the sanctity of marriage all by themselves.  It is entirely hypocritical with all that is going on in the world to be so worried about running to Congress to ban this.  WTF?  If they are so worried about gay marriage, because it destroys the sanctity of a marriage between a man and a woman, why won't they allow civil unions at least?  One only has to be told the sad story of Tampa PD Officer Lois Marerro to understand how necessary it is.  To not allow at least civil unions is to deprive a portion of the population the protection provided by the law.  Where does sanctity fit in making sure you dont lose your home or you can still access your bank account or you can make important life decisions if your chosen life partner passes on?  That is something I believe everyone should be afforded.  It is disgraceful that tax-paying citizens are denied things others are allowed like this.

Marriage is an institution sanctioned by the church not the government.  Bush has no right in asking for a constitutional amendment regarding this matter because of the separation of church and state.  We have some very real issues to deal with without this distraction because that is what it is, a distraction.  Real issues that need to be addressed are the efforts to return Katrina victims to their homes and jobs;the very real issue of healthcare for the working poor and middle class that either cannot afford it or it is not offered through their jobs; reinstate access to healthcare for active duty members, retirees and their families; what about all the scandals that are coming out of Capital Hill because of greed and corruption; what about the constantly rising gas prices that enable the gas companies to continue to gain profits;what happened to affordable child care for working people;why not an increase in the minimum wage; why do they always cut healthcare and educational grants when they are looking for a wage to reduce their spending instead of cutting costs to the rich; why are we still fighting a war where we are losing thousands of our soldiers;why are they cutting healthcare access to the veterans who fought in the previous wars and were guarenteed healthcare coverage for life;where are the jobs for non-skilled workers that are being taken by the hordes of illegal aliens who can get benefits that we cannot get. etc..This presidency has not benefitted the American people in the least because our country is being sold off to the Europeons to the highest bidder. Sure we all have temptations in our lives, but it is what we do with the temptations that matters. We can either ask for grace and strength to refrain and/or deliverance from our sinful nature, or we can close our eyes and ears and refuse to see or hear and do as we see fit. Either way we reap what we sow. BUT when we are in Christ we are new and ALL things which can separate us from God become offensive to us. We may be tempted to do them, but they burden us to do so. And when we do sin, we are crushed deep in our hearts and soul and yearn for repentance and forgiveness. So we cast our burdens on Him where our sins are cover by Jesus' blood and cast away. Doesn't it say in the Bible that the only person that is able to judge us is God and only him?  So when you voice your opinions and make all of these hateful and assanine (sp) comments about what is right and what is not, then aren't you in fact judging?  You know what just fuck it... I mean I personally like the fact that my private life is just that.  I don't need a piece of paper with a few words about marriage and what not to justify or make my 9 year relationship with the only woman I have ever been with valid.  I can only make sure that what we have established together will only go to our kids and to the surviving person in the event that one of us passes etc....  All of this stuff is tiresome to say the least.  We have bigger issues to deal with, like all of the men and women  (not just Americans) in this foolish war that seems like its never going to end, or of all the people that are still without homes in Louisiana due to the hurricanes that ravished the Gulf Coast last year and will possibly do so again this year because we are too busy with our noses in other people business wanting to know who is sleeping with whom the fixing the levee system and making sure that gas prices will soon be affordable to everyone.

I can't help but shake my head when so-called Christians claim that marriage is a God-created institution.  Nothing like rewriting history.  Marriage, such as it is, developed because of the need/desire of very wealthy, generally royal, families to keep their money in the hands of those deemed worthy of it.   It has also, historically, worked nicely as a way to enslave women who were once viewed as the property of their husbands.  

My final thought: if the institution of marriage is in disarray and under attack, then the only folks to blame are those who have been allowed to get married all along.

I just don't see what the problem is here. Don't like homosexual marraige? Don't marry inside your own gender, problem solved! Wow, how am I the only one who realises this? It is not up to Congress to legislate morality, and blocking this would probably get overturned in Judicial Review anyway, given that it overrides states rights, and arguably our first amendment rights too, both of which are in the appropriately named "Bill of Rights"

And to those who argue that marraige is for procreation, why is it then that you allow infertile couples to marry as well? Or older people? I just don't get it. Or is that the next group you're going to attack with your inbred moronic hate campaign? After this, what's next, you'll outlaw marraige between people of different skin color? This is just opening the door to further restrictions of freedom.

To those of you who argue marraige is a religous institution, why are we making a law? Wouldn't that violate the First Amendment? You know, what whole Congress can't make any laws supporting or hindering the practice of any specific religon, nor can it establish a state-sponsored religon? Hmm, sounds like a violation of the Constitution if this ever gets passed, not that most people are intelligent enough to realize that... morons, all of you..

well....  the love is only one. there is no different kind of loves for same or opposite sex.   the love is only one. its al lthe time love as such as  romantic, walking on the beach, buy a rose, going out to the movie, dinner, everything is the same love we had. no matter what. Everyone thinks its wrong and that its going against god but i dont think it is. At my old church we were looking for a minister and a guy a came gave a sermen guess what he was a gay man. So what if your gay or lesbian or bisexual or straight if your not hurting anyone what doesnt matter. If the gays are bothering you that much then go commit suicide cause there not leaving. As long as they dont hit on you then you'll be fine if they hit on you them you can start complaining. Until then shut your mouth and deal.

ok. Ima 25 successful lesbian female. I am educated and continung it and am very cultured and see what people do to society....people that are ignorant! Those that don't know gay people or prefer them around i say to you, what are you hiding yourself? And thoise that do know some gay people and still don't agree....not everyone is the same. We are all made to be different are we not? If we were meant to be the same there would be no color in our life or anywhere.
