Don't forget to set your TiVo tonight for Lifetime's portrayal of Gwen Araujo, a transgendered teenager who was beaten to death in California by a group of young men.
The Washington Blade gives it good marks. Reviewer Brian Moylan writes that the film focuses to a great extent on the relationship between Araujo (played by J.D. Pardo) and her mother (Mercedes Ruehl):
"Take, for instance, a scene where [her mother], who has been trying to force Araujo to dress as a boy for months, finally realizes that she must accept her daughter for who she is. In a crying fit, Araujo screams, “I’m a freak,” and Guerrero answers, “You’re not a freak. We just need to redo your makeup. You know they have waterproof mascara.”
Although that reads "funny," it's a huge statement about acceptance. And so is this movie.

I just finished watching this movie, and still can't stop the tears from flowing. My heart is so saddened by the horrible things people do to eachother out of fear, misunderstanding and hate. My respect and admiration go out to Gwen's family for being so brave, loving and loyal. I cannot even image the terrible pain that Gwen's family must have had to endure. My prayers go out to Gwen's mother, a woman who stood strong next to her child with all the love that a mother could give. A young life so brutally taken away in such a manner is totally a sin. It is time for us to unite together as brothers and sisters and realize that we are all God's children no matter what physical differences we may have. If I could be granted one wish at this moment, it would be that I could reach out my arms and give Gwen's mother a loving hug.
And to you Gwen......know that you were loved and will not be forgotten!
Just a quick comment...the actor who portrayed Gwen was gorgeous as a man or a woman! The movie makes you heartsick for everyonee who is now or ever was scared, confused, denied, or condemned for thier sexuality!
Be secure enough to be what you are and be secure enough to let others do the same.

I agree with those above myself. It was a good and sad movie. I loved the message that it portrayed for people to open their minds and hearts to difference.
