One 'L' of a Superhero

Buzz around the web this week is that DC comics plans to debut a new take on 'Batwoman' ... now, with extra gay. Under this incarnation, the female flying mammal will be a lipstick lesbian, out to some family members, but not the public at large. According to DC Comics Vice President/Executive Editor Dan DiDio,"We deal with stories about identities and secret identities," which explains DC's decision, and is a refreshing turn from the not-so-subtly closeted duo. It's always good to represent your real self in the real world as much as possible, even if it is normal for you to jump around the outdoors in tights and a mask.

I applaud DC Comics' attempts to create convincing characters that represent the gays. While it was great that Green Lantern had a gay friend, it's not enough. There are plenty of gay heroes in real life -- why not put them in the comics?

Incidentally, riddle me these two queries:

1) Don't we already have
gay superheroes?

2) Wasn't Batwoman ALREADY a lesbian?

As if you're not already planning your next Halloween costume.

i think that's a really amazing idea. more of the media should broaden their horizons like this. maybe it will stop some discrimination.

so now we have to have more of this gay stuff in comics. how are you going to explain to your young readers when batwomen dies of aids

Good grief. . . How much more homophobic can you get? It's a comic book, if it is not in your tastes then do not buy it. As far as Mrs. Rev. Lovejoy's typical cry of "Won't someone think of the children?" It's not up to to you or the conservative goverment to decide what someone can and cannot read. If the person is a minor it is up to that minor's respective parent/guardian to decide what is right or wrong to read.

It's about time!!
Look, I'm straight, but this is dam n important nowadays. We are constantly in a struggle for the freedom of speech Americans have died for. It doesn't matter whether it's moral or not, especially if the public's opinion is based on a religious view. The point is that we must not start censoring things like this!

What if in 2 generations, everyone were gay or lesbian? There would be no 3rd generation. cyberjanieb

Another comment claiming that Batman is gay......how original (He's not, just accept it). I'm glad to see that DC is trying this Batwoman comic though, it's a big step forward in my opinion. I hope it finds success.

Censoring, huh? I think people and the liberal media in general are censoring straight nowadays. If someone's idea for a show happens to not include gay in it somewhere (certainly not used as a derogatory term, no we must censor that) it is a discriminatory show and must be pulled from the air. I don't have a problem with gay people, don't get me wrong. I have a problem with the gay movement. We've been doing perfectly fine so far without having to contaminate everything we see to tailor to a minority group. Do remember that this is a democracy (that means majority rules). Now, someone will twist my words and spin them to make me look like a horrible, terrible person... go ahead, make my day.

Thats really sick!!! DC Comics is ruining one of the best batman characters. If they don't want batwomen, don't have her, but donot make her a lesbian!

GIVE ME A GOD DAMN BREAK!!!!...We dont need to make batgerl/batwoman gay. What we need to do is give her great ass kicking story lines. Batwoman dosent need to be gay to survive. Just look at all the female superhero comic books, these book potray women in positive, strong, sexcee ASS KICKING WOMEN to be recon with. WHY THE HELL do we have to cowtow to the gay/lisbean coalition. If straight people stand up and take a stand on something...the gay community gets all huffy and make a big stink about it, Its ok for them to push a gay character onto us, but we cant make a stand for a character staying straight. If the gay community want a gay or lisbean superhero, then make one up from scratch. Or rather if you want a gay or lisbean comic book character to preach on societies views on gay and lisbean issues and preach and force us to give in, then make a character up. Give it background, life and meaning. Look what going on right now with cartoon network and "The Boondocks". This is a BLACK CARTOON and its AWESOME. Look at the cartoon "Drawn Together" this is gaining popularity. These are two fine examples of need of representation leading to new ideas and characters.

ALSO, why make batwoman gay, why not make catwoman gay, or make cat woman a trans-sexuial....is it that the queer eyes for the straight guys and gerls only want representation for themselves and forget about the transvestites, transsexuals, cross dressers and dykes.....I think anyways we already have a lisbean superhero..."THE SHE-HULK".

LISTEN UP...TO ALL MY LISBEAN AND GAY FRIENDS....GROW THE FCUK_UP.
Comic books are meant for kids, it allows then to dream and fantasize of worlds and of adventures created in their imagination. It is through the use of imagination and the world of fantacy that kids that dreamnt of space and moon travel and of distant galaxcies make it a reality today.

THERE IS NOTHING STOPPING A GAY TEENAGER OR LISBEAN FROM BECOMING A SUPERHERO WHEN THEY GROW UP...IF THATS THE CASE, THAT YOU NEED A GAY SUPERHERO FOR THE GAY AND LISBO TEENAGE COMMUNITY BECAUSE STRAIGHT SUPERHEROS CANT TEACH THEM ANYTHING THEN WHY STOP THERE.
IF A GAY COUPLE WHO WANTS TO ADOPT A CHILD< THEN MAKE SURE THAT THEY ONLY ADOPT A GAY CHILD. NOW HOW DOES THAT SOUND???...GOD DAMN STUPID, RIGHT???.
