Midterm elections are only five months off. Bad timing since Bush's poll numbers are reaching all-time lows, hovering around 30 percent of Americans who approve of the job he's doing. Many of his own supporters are fed up with him -- and the Republican party -- over the bungling of the war in Iraq, the price of gas, a growing government that is anything but limited and certainly not spendthrift. And don't forget the sea of scandals in Congress, lingering anger over hurricane response, and total disbelief about goverment eavesdropping on American citizens.
America knows Bush is on the wrong track. He's nervous, and the GOP is even more so.
So what's a flailing president to do? Hey! How about some good old-fashioned gay bashing?
George Bush is stinking up the White House rose garden tomorrow with something he's actually very good at: a big, pompous display of calculated hate-mongering (immigration, anyone?) Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's time to play the gay card again.
George Bush will gather his people, and a big bunch of reporters and cameras, in Jackie Kennedy's gorgeous rose garden -- he's making news here, folks -- and warn America that it's imperative that Congress amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage.
Does this bill have even a slim chance of passing the Senate on Tuesday? No. Why then is he doing this, you may ask?
1: He and his party are scared.
2: He knows how to play to people's worst fears.
3: Most importantly, it's a perfect tool to make democrats and anyone else who opposes the bill look bad. Think of the commercials they can create to let homophobic-leaning voters know that XYZ-candidate supports gay marriage!
I'm sure Bush has some good zingers lined up for tomorrow. This is what he had to say in his Saturday radio address yesterday:
"Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and a wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society ... Marriage cannot be cut off from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening this good influence on society."
Jeez, I wonder where that leaves all those divorced straight people I know? Is he saying that they're a bad influence on society? Maybe we need an amendment to the Constitution to deal with them, too.
I've been "married" to the same man for 18 years. Many of my gay, lesbian and straight friends are in similar longterm relationships. I also have gay, lesbian and straight friends whose marriages and relationships have ended.
What I'm saying is that sexual orientation does not determine whether or not two people can have a healthy, happy marriage. Love doesn't discriminate. The U.S. Consititution shouldn't either.
But then, that's not really what this is about, is it?

I am a 24yr old lesbian in CA. And it just hurts so bad in my heart, to know that in this day in age that there are still so many hatefull hearts out out there. We have come so far but there is still a long way to go. God is love and he loves all in the ones who are gay why is that so hard for so many to know this?
As a young man .. and been watching the coverage of the gay marriage, i am one that proved to Tampa Fl. that it can be done and no one can stop it. Even tho it's not legal, we still had a wedding. so i'm hoping that all of this flare up in Bushes face.. that we are still one nation under god.. and we shall not be pushed back in the fields, because we have now stepped in the cities to be seen and known....

Regarding Louisiana - I suppose you feel he's at fault for the hurricane too..... And Iraq -- hello, thank you President Clinton -- he never started anything (yeah - I guess it was just too unpopular for him to "dirty" his hands) and since Bush took office, he's been trying to clean up what Clinton just didn't do....... And as far as Gay marriage's -- I don't mean to be judgemental - but have you seen the way God created men and women -- they were designed to "fit together"....... There is an intelligent conversation that could be had on this subject - should gay marriage equal straight marriage, or should we simply provide for civil unions that have the same legal weight? The liberal media has totally distort G.W.'s stand on this issue. He said from the beginning that he supported civil unions. He knows that his bill will not pass, and at some point there will be civil unions in all states. The word "marriage" is not worth losing everything over. As long as gays have the same legal spousal rights such as housing, insurance, medical decisions, why fight something that is bigger than even the USA?
I support this president on some venues, but I totally disagree with him or anyone else that wants to legislate discrimination. I feel this is a major step for mankind in the backward direction. It is quite clear that Conservatives have nothing left to fall back on and are now pushing this issue in attempt to rally their base. Many of whom are afraid of what they do not know. It is mind boggling that they are so quick to discriminate against gay couples who deserve the same rights as those that are afforded to straight couples through marriage. I also blame the Gay and Lesbian organizations who are supposed to help fight against these blatant attempts to alienate gay people by not acting as aggressively as possible. By aggressive I mean a campaign that would help educate the ignorant as to the many contribution of gay and lesbians and one that would remind people that our country should have already learned its lesson about what discrimination does to the fabric of society in general. It is long overdue. Those who believe that gay marriage should be illegal should take the time to learn about who this will affect and why they are wrong. This administration has turned the clock back on years if not decades of progress, instigated wars that are unjust, placed us in danger through its ridiculous foreign policies, created unnecessary national debt, and has been linked to scandal after scandal. Let's take the spot light off innocent taxpaying American's who simply want the same rights as everyone else and put it on the real danger in America, the crooks and liars in Washington, DC. Bush and his cronies and the extreme religious right, need to READ the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In there they will see that ALL people are guaranteed the Right to life, liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, also that ALL men (and women) are Created EQUAL. So, as far as I am concerned the Founding Fathers guaranteed us the right to marry, whether or not that was what they intended. They did NOT specify only Republicans, the Christian Right or the very wealthy. They stated that EVERYONE had the same rights.
And, I have heterosexual friends who have lived together for more than 7 years and are considered legally married under common law. So, no ceremony, no documents, just having lived together for 7 years and they have ALL the same legal rights as those who chose a wedding and a marriage liscense.
How fair is that?
I say, let gays marry or have a "commitment ceremony" and just be done with it!! In what way would gays marrying hurt Bush or the religious types that object so strenuously? Or anyone for that matter?
This amendment to the Constitution to ban gay marraiage will only set this counry way back, especially in comparison to Canada and some European countries where it is legal. This will only make discrimination legal. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN in the "greatest country".

I have known many gay and lesbian people. They are no different than any of the hetero people I know. Why must people always think of the sexual part of the relationship betweens gays? That is only a part of their relationship, just as it is only a part of a heterosexual couples realtionship. And what is it with people who think they can "change if they really want to"? I know one young man who tried for three years to "go straight". It couldn't happen.
My grown children have some very dear friends who are gay and I have known these friends since they were children. That is what really made me open my eyes and realize that they are born that way for the most part. "God doesn't make mistakes". Of course, their are some homosexuals who, because of traumatic corcumstances in their live, have chosen to be gay.
I am a supporter of gay marriage. I also believe that all states should legalize COMMON LAW marriages. I have know couples who have been together for years, but because they aren't married in the eyes of the law, they can't reap the benefits that married couples can. These two types of relationships seem to last longer and be stronger than traditionally married couples.

There is no reason why perfectly normal, tax paying citizens should be denied equal rights under the law. Laws are meant to protect people. I don't hate gay/lesbian people. Those I've worked with have been some of the hardest working, fun people to be teamed with on a project. I am a gay man and was in a very healthy marriage for 16 years. My husband died a year ago and I lost everything because of how the government is handling this matter. Family's are families and lets not for get all of the poor parents out there that are straight or gay and lost their partners. I feel the president would like to take their children away from them because they are now a one parent family. Look this is out and out terrorism in it self. Since Bush has been on his crusade to rid the world of gay people. It is giving all the straight people the right to bigotry and hate crimes. It is a shame that in the 80's I could walk as a proud gay man and now in 2006 my president is okaying the right to hate gay people. Tho I don't agree with some things the Pres is doing, he IS right in opposing gay marriage. Gay marriage supports "crimes against nature". Pres Bush has advisors, so is not speaking solely his own beliefs. Many gays came to live this way b/c of ILLNESS &/or TRAUMA. Trauma of "very young exposure to sex" can cause mental illness or sex addiction & ENDOCRINE imbalances from stress. A mother can leave a "marker" in a baby's brain if the mother while pregnant experienced extreme stress. The marker can be for "ENDOCRINE upsets" triggered if the person faces stress. The hormone upset can be Thyroid, Adrenal, Pituitary, even Sex hormone upset. This can lead to a female having a hoarse voice if thyroid dips & not so feminine if androgens rise, similar in a male if hormones get upset, as estrogen rising too high in relation to androgens. These ailments CAN be reversed. In sex addiction one won't have gay behavior unless there are imbalanced sex hormones. 1 exception is when a female who was sexually traumatized since young by a male, seeks sex with a female as her "safety net", to not have sex with a male. Her same gender sex is still abnormal & certainly NOT morally right- It's sad when sexually abused victims won't accept that living GAY after being sexually abused is giving IN to an abusive type behavior. Gay sex IS abuse towards one's OWN body & also to the other same sex partner's body. No one is above anyone else, we are all equal. Homosexuality and Bisexuality is not something you can choose. What I don't understand is why a lot of Christians (and I'm not saying all, but quite a few) preach that god hates gays. What happened to god loving everyone? And even if you don't believe that, what about basic human rights? We went through the exact same thing in the 60s and 70s with African Americans, having a different skin color or sexual orientation does not give people the right to treat you like you're below them, and ban you from having basic human rights. Marriage is about LOVE. Denying that or saying that married gay people are having a bad influence on society is just plain ignorance.

Why is the rest of the world basically more free and open to the Gay and Lesbian community? I myself am not gay, but I believe that it isn't a choice for homosexuals to be homosexuals. They were born with it, and can't do anything about it. Who am I to judge you for what you believe in, and the lifestyle you have. Bush is the biggest prick in the world, and Chaney has a lesbian daughter. He respects her, and loves her, and therefore can't support Bush, I guess. I think that Bush could learn a lot from his colleague's daughter, and maybe learn, we are all human beings, and God loves us all the same. It isn't a sin in my mind. I think, that we all don't know until we actually meet God ourselves, what he actually thinks of all of this. I think that he loves us all, regardless of what our sexual orientation is, and the part about marriage being a sacret thing; well, I think that that whole thing went down the drain a very long time ago. I am an openly gay person; have been so for the last 30 years. Have participated in Gay Pride parades, marches, and protests. Have been arrested on several occasions in peaceful sit-in demonstrations. However, I think that we all should have a true sense of history, and not think that only George Bush is against us. Marriage is about stabilizing a relationship. To keep mankind monogimous. Gay people do have the reality of being promiscuous. That is the natural being of being a human. A marriage license helps to keep a man and woman, or man and a man faithful to each other. That is what it is all about. Gay marrage should never be legal anywhere, because it goes against THE BIBLE which is the infallable word of GOD. In the Bible; there is an account where God destroied A whole nation because of homosexuality and that should be enough to convince anyone that it is immoral, un natural and SIN which will lead you straight to hell if you don't change your life style.
