Lance Bass Is Gay; Now Gossip Whores Go Crazier

The Page Six vultures at the New York Post have swooped down on Lance Bass and his boyfriend Reiken Lehmkuhl. That didn't take long.

According to Page Six's "spy," we shouldn't expect America's newest A-gay couple to be together much longer. The Post characterizes Reichen as "controlling" and less than amazing. The unnamed spy is quoted as saying Reichen "forced Lance to come out just at the same time he has a book coming out ['Here's What We'll Say'] so he could ride the publicity wave."

Personally, I like celebrity news, but find gossip columns to be kind of gross. The two are very different. Gossip columns traffic in rumor, often mean-spirited, making mountains out of molehills (sometimes not even that) with the hope that they'll sell papers. And they do.

It's true that most gays I've talked to "don't like" Reichen. But we love and hate the personal-life side of celebrities (as opposed to loving or hating their work) based on image, fantasy and, yes, gossip. Unless you have a direct connection to Bass and his beau, you don't really know what's going on in their relationship or their private lives. And the same goes for Paris Hilton, Brangelina and the rest of the celebrity world.

When Lance Bass tells the world he's gay, that's news, inasmuch as people care about Lance Bass as an artist or a "celebrity." When Page Six splashes a warning that we shouldn't expect Lance and Reichen to last, that's just trash.

Point well taken.  How many of us have ever had a meaningful conversation with any celebrity and yet we love, hate or as Ann Coulter is now doing call them "fags".  We need to live our own lives and be concerned with people we can love or hate on a personal level.

It was really the gay media who instigated Lance coming out.  So I don't buy that it's his boyfriend's fault entirely anyway.  I just wonder what's going to happen when Lance and his boyfriend break up.

Yeah, but seriously...You don't expect it to last, do you? ;)

My first reaction to this bit of gossip was "good for Reichen; Lance's decision to come out was a good one" ... but then I need to remember that for all intents and purposes, Lance has been as 'out' as I have for years.  His friends knew, his family knew, he had a boyfriend, there was no wife or girlfriend in the picture that he was cheating on.  The difference between Lance Bass and me is that when Lance calls 'People Magazine' and says, "I'm Gay" -- that's actually news.  If I tried that, I'm sure the response would be, "Yeah, you and millions of others; what's your point?"
I think we generally put too much pressure on celebrities to come out publically.  Most of the pressure comes from gay non-celebrities who can't possibly know what it's like to come out to everyone in America, and who forget that, prior to coming out in print, Lance, Rosie, Ellen, k.d., Chad, and Rupert were just as out as we are now.
All the same, I'm glad Lance came out.  He did it gracefully and said some important things while given the megaphone.  If he and Reichen last -- that's great.  If not, I'm sure they'll get over it and find another to call "boyfriend."

I had a feeling he might be but I hope they are happy together. The press needs to let them be.It takes a lot of courage for him too open up his personal life to the public.

Look, i am getting tired of the press feeling the need to "OUT" celebraties.. I think just like all of us, i think he should have come out when he felt he was secure.. people like perez hilton and all these other big mouth Gossips, and i have to say, CINDY WILLIAMS is nothing but a big *****.. she has to tell people everything she wants you NOT to know.. i think its about time we let these gossip Queens to keep news like someone's personal life out of the press.. Lance seems happy and i am for one glad he came out, but it should have been up to him.. I am a big Lance Bass fan and am not surprised to hear he came out, but i still feel its up to him..

Lance has been out to gay bars for years. One of his fave bars was Parliament house in Orlando, Florida. Who cares? I sure as hell dont. Privacy should be respected!
